Wes Streeting has initiated an independent inquiry into the overdiagnosis of mental health conditions, amidst Labour's efforts to curb welfare spending. The Health Secretary is concerned about the surge in mental health diagnoses, including autism and ADHD, which have become the primary reason for sickness benefit claims. Since 2019, there's been a 1.2 million increase in disability or incapacity benefit claims among working-age individuals, with a record number of young people leaving the workforce. Streeting warns that this 'overdiagnosis' is 'writing off' too many people. The review, led by Professor Peter Fonagy, will investigate whether normal feelings and stresses are being 'overpathologised' and explore the impact of social media, smartphones, and living costs on rising mental distress, leading to long NHS waiting lists. The NHS reports that nearly a quarter of adults have common mental health conditions, with 8.9 million on antidepressants in England, up from 6.9 million a decade ago, a trend Streeting finds concerning. This trend is further supported by data showing a 76% rise in 16-34-year-olds off work with mental health conditions between 2019 and 2024. The review aims to overhaul the NHS mental health system, ensuring help is provided before crises occur and while individuals can still work. However, the inquiry faces criticism from some, including Andy Bell, CEO of the Centre for Mental Health, who argues against the notion of overdiagnosis, suggesting instead a real increase in mental distress. Mark Rowland, CEO of the Mental Health Foundation, emphasizes the need to understand the impact of recent social, economic, and technological changes on mental health and to respond effectively. The review's findings will shape future policies and practices in mental health support.
