In the past 48 hours alone, raw sewage has found its way into several rivers across Suffolk. The River Dove at Brackenham, the Rattlesden River near Felsham, the iconic River Gipping in Ipswich, and even the River Glemsford in Glemsford have all been affected.
But here's where it gets controversial: raw sewage has been continuously discharged into the River Sapiston in Woolpit for two days straight. Additionally, the Tributary River Gipping in Earl Stonham has also been a site of concern.
Anglia Water, a key player in this issue, has responded with a proposed plan. A spokeswoman shared their strategy, which includes a significant £1 billion investment aimed at reducing storm overflow spills. This investment will focus on creating new storage solutions, preventing surface water from entering the sewer network, enhancing monitoring systems, and increasing the capacity of treatment sites to manage unpredictable weather conditions.
Their goal? To reduce discharges from storm overflows by a substantial 17% within the next five years.
