Marburg Virus Outbreak in Ethiopia: 3 Dead, High Alert Declared (2026)

Ethiopia's Health Ministry Reports Marburg Virus Outbreak: Three Dead, Three More Suspected

In a recent development, Ethiopia's Health Ministry has confirmed a Marburg virus outbreak in the country's Southern Region, with a grim toll already reported. As of Monday, November 17, 2025, three individuals have succumbed to the highly contagious and deadly haemorrhagic disease, while three more deaths are under investigation for a potential link to the virus.

This announcement comes after the initial confirmation of the outbreak on Friday, November 14, 2025, when at least nine cases were identified in the affected town. The Ethiopian Public Health Institute's reference laboratory has been instrumental in confirming the deaths, stating that the virus has taken the lives of three individuals.

The Ministry did not disclose an updated total number of cases but revealed that 129 people who had been in contact with the confirmed cases are currently isolated and under close monitoring. Marburg, a virus closely related to Ebola, manifests with severe symptoms such as intense headaches and haemorrhaging. Historical outbreaks in Africa have been devastating, with fatality rates reaching up to 80% or more, often within a short eight to nine-day period after symptom onset.

The virus is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids, including saliva and blood, or by handling infected wild animals, such as monkeys. This outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the importance of public health measures and the need for swift action to contain the spread of such a dangerous disease.
