Is Malaysia ready to ride the van-life revolution? That's the question behind a bold new experiment shaking up local tourism planning.
At Pantai Hiburan in Rompin, Pahang, a sleek new RV park stands as one of two government-backed pilot projects launched in 2025 to test whether Malaysia is truly prepared for the growing popularity of recreational vehicle travel. This initiative — which some call a test of Malaysia’s 'freedom-on-wheels' future — aims to find out if local infrastructure and regulations can keep pace with rising traveler interest.
Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu revealed that these pilot parks form part of a larger national push to study the real-world impact of new planning guidelines for RV tourism. Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat, she emphasized that the project aligns with the surge of interest in van-life adventures, where travelers seek to explore Malaysia’s scenic destinations in fully equipped motorhomes.
According to Aiman Athirah, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) prepared a complete set of guidelines for building and operating RV parks — officially endorsed by the Cabinet on October 8 last year. These guidelines act as a go-to manual for everyone involved, from park operators and developers to local councils and regulators.
“But here’s where it gets interesting,” she added. “The guidelines take into account every party’s interest — not just the travelers, but also the site operators, local authorities, and even safety agencies. Everything from planning and approval right through to daily operations is covered.”
She was responding to Kalam Salan (PN–Sabak Bernam), who questioned what steps the government is taking to boost RV-related tourism, especially in creating more park spaces that cater to both Malaysians and international visitors looking for a road-trip experience.
To date, two experimental parks have been rolled out. The first, at Pantai Hiburan in Rompin, Pahang, partners with the Rompin District Council. The second, at Pantai Bagan Lalang in Sepang under the Sepang Municipal Council, was launched on September 21, 2025. Three additional locations are already on the radar: Port Dickson’s Pantai Cahaya, Taman Tasik Seremban in Negeri Sembilan, and Terengganu’s Pantai Teluk Marina in Kemaman.
When Kalam suggested partnering with the Malaysian Camper Van and Motorhome Association to ensure designs match the actual needs and vehicle sizes of RV users, the minister confirmed that such consultations have already taken place. She noted that the final guidelines even specify campsite dimensions and essential amenities — fire safety included.
Another lawmaker, Azli Yusof (PH–Shah Alam), pressed further, asking what criteria were used to choose pilot locations. The minister explained that accessibility, safety, and risk potential were key deciding factors.
However, she stressed that nurturing a vibrant RV tourism scene isn’t a task KPKT can do alone. It requires collaboration with multiple agencies, including the Transport Ministry, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, as well as the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry. This cross-agency approach highlights how complex yet promising the future of mobile tourism could become for Malaysia.
