With talks at a standstill, ECHL players are on the brink of a strike, threatening to disrupt the league's upcoming season. The Professional Hockey Players' Association (PHPA) has announced that its ECHL members have issued a strike notice, set to take effect on Friday, just as play is set to resume after the holiday break. This move comes after months of negotiations and a lack of progress in reaching a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the league.
The PHPA's executive director, Brian Ramsay, expressed frustration over the league's refusal to engage in meaningful negotiations. He accused the ECHL of unfair bargaining practices, including direct contact with players to present proposals, which have been reported to the National Labor Relations Board. Ramsay highlighted the players' struggle for basic rights, such as choosing properly fitting and safe helmets, and the league's provision of used equipment.
The players' grievances extend to travel conditions, with Ramsay mentioning instances of players spending over 28 hours on a bus for back-to-back games, while being paid less than the referees who work those games. The ECHL's latest proposal, posted on its website, offers a 16.4% salary cap increase for the current season, with retroactive pay upon ratification, and future increases to nearly 27% above the current cap. However, Ramsay argues that these offers are insufficient, as inflation would result in players earning less than their 2018 equivalents before the pandemic.
The league, on the other hand, warns of potential disruptions if a work stoppage occurs, including postponed games and loss of housing and medical benefits for players. Ramsay views these threats as unfair labor practices, emphasizing the league's attempts to intimidate and bully players. The situation has created a tense atmosphere, with players feeling disrespected and undervalued by the league's management.
