An unexpected guest has turned the tables on ice fishers, transforming their cozy shacks into a convenient doorway for a clever otter! Imagine settling in for a day of fishing, only to hear a peculiar crunching sound from beneath your feet. That's precisely what happened to Bruce Browne at Lac des Mille Lacs, who discovered a resourceful otter had found a rather unique way to navigate the frozen landscape.
Bruce, an avid ice angler for about six years, was enjoying his pastime when this surprising visitor made an appearance. He managed to capture some incredible video footage, which he later shared on Facebook, describing the experience as "pretty interesting and exciting." He recounted hearing the distinct crunching noise and, upon investigation, saw the otter's nose poking through the ice directly beneath his fishing shack. The otter, it seems, was quite determined, chewing its way through to create a personal passageway! Bruce was quick to grab his camera and ended up filming the otter for an extended period, capturing several videos of its ingenuity.
While Bruce had spotted otters in the area before, this was the first time one had ventured so close. He theorizes that the scent of fish, likely lingering from the fishing holes, attracted the curious creature. "He carved himself a big enough hole before he got through to come visit us," Bruce explained, highlighting the otter's persistent efforts. To prevent the otter from fully entering his shack, Bruce makes sure to keep the lids on his fishing holes, allowing the otter to travel between the lake and the underside of the shack, but not inside.
But here's where it gets even more fascinating... This isn't an isolated incident! Another angler, Don Hamilton, also shared video from the same area of Lac des Mille Lacs. Don encountered an otter that approached his truck shortly after he had driven onto the ice. He described the otter as running right at him, and he had to keep his puppy from startling the wild animal. The otter came right up to his truck door, looked him directly in the face, and then quickly darted away. Don has seen otters in larger groups before, sliding and playing on the ice, but always at a much greater distance.
"They're beautiful. They're smart," Don remarked, sharing his admiration for these creatures. He mentioned that otters frequently visit his camp at Shebandowan, often "stealing our minnows," but he finds them a joy to watch and incredibly entertaining.
And this is the part most people miss... While otters can be a delight to observe, they can also present a bit of a challenge for anglers. Ken Wing, who manages operations at Shacks Landing, noted that otters can be a nuisance. He explained that some fishermen keep their catch fresh by placing fish on stringers and lowering them into the water, only to find their stringers empty by morning – a clear sign of an otter's opportunistic foraging.
According to information from the Ontario Fur Managers Association, otters have a diverse diet. They primarily feast on fish, amphibians, crayfish, and other invertebrates. They also consume turtles, snakes, waterfowl, and muskrats. Interestingly, during the warmer summer months, they may also incorporate some vegetation into their diet. Although otters are largely nocturnal, they can certainly be spotted and active during daylight hours.
