In a move that is sparking fierce debate across the sports world, American Olympic swimming champion Cody Miller has committed to competing in the controversial Enhanced Games scheduled for next summer. This upcoming competition, set to take place in Las Vegas in May 2026, is unique in several ways—most notably because it will allow athletes to use performance-enhancing substances legally, a practice that traditionally violates standard sports regulations.
Cody Miller, a prominent figure in the swimming community at 33 years old, made history as part of the U.S. men's 4x100 meter medley relay team that secured gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, alongside none other than Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time. Beyond that team victory, Miller also earned an individual bronze medal for the 100-meter breaststroke at Rio. He has previously held American records in both long course and short course events, including the 100m breaststroke and the 200m and 50m breaststroke disciplines.
Miller’s announcement marks him as the ninth swimmer to sign up for the Enhanced Games, which promises a lucrative reward of $1 million for setting a world record in the 50m freestyle, and $250,000 for winning any other individual swimming event. This prize pool emphasizes the event’s focus on pushing athletic boundaries, though not everybody is convinced that this approach aligns with the true spirit of sport.
But here’s where it gets controversial: The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has strongly condemned the Enhanced Games, issuing a statement in May asserting that the event jeopardizes athlete safety and fundamentally undermines the core values that make sports meaningful and fair. WADA argues that the games promote the use—and even facilitate the sale—of banned substances, with some reports indicating the event sells testosterone boosters on its official website.

Similarly, British swim federation Aquatics GB dismissed the event after swimmer Ben Proud publicly committed to participating.
Despite the controversy, Miller expressed enthusiasm about his decision. In a press release, he stated, “I am very excited to join the field and compete in the Enhanced Games. Athletes in our sport deserve to be treated like true professionals, and that begins with prioritizing safety and well-being. I believe that Enhanced’s transparent, medically supported system embodies that principle. I support their vision of providing athletes with the best possible support in the world.”
Miller is now joined by other American athletes who have also entered the event, including sprinter Fred Kerley, swimmer Megan Romano, and weightlifter Wesley Kitts—each of whom has taken a risk by aligning with a competition that many see as pushing ethical and safety boundaries.
