China's clean energy revolution is a beacon of hope, but it's a story with a twist. While the nation has achieved an incredible feat by surpassing fossil fuel capacity with clean energy sources, the reality is far from a simple transition.
China, a global leader in clean energy investment, boasts an impressive 52% of its operating power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources as of February 2026. This achievement is a result of a decade-long surge in solar and wind installations. However, here's where it gets controversial: China's coal power sector is far from irrelevant.
Despite the clean energy boom, China remains the world's largest greenhouse gas polluter, and coal continues to play a significant role. With the world's largest coal power fleet, China accounts for a staggering 71% of global coal power capacity under development.
But why is China, a pioneer in renewables, still so reliant on coal?
The answer lies in energy security. China's rapid economic growth and rising electricity demand have prompted the country to maintain a diverse energy mix. Coal, a reliable and readily available resource, ensures a stable grid and prevents blackouts during peak demand or periods of low hydropower generation.
As of January 2026, China's operating coal power capacity stood at a massive 1,243 GW, with an additional 501 GW under development. Over the past decade, China has added an impressive 362 GW of operating coal power capacity.
And this is the part most people miss: China's current coal power build-out cycle reached a new high in 2025. Despite declining coal power generation, the country commissioned a record-breaking 78 GW of coal power capacity that year. New and reactivated coal power project proposals surged to an unprecedented 161 GW, reflecting a rush by the coal industry to advance projects before tighter emissions regulations.
China's commitment to energy transition is undeniable, with the nation leading global investments in renewable technologies. In 2025, China accounted for a staggering $800 billion of the $2.3 trillion energy transition investments, according to a BloombergNEF report. Yet, China's approach is unique. Instead of abandoning coal, the country utilizes its domestic manufacturing chain to expand renewables while relying on coal for baseload capacity.
